The next day at work she couldn't get comfortable either. After a while, Zig poked his head out. "Are you okay, Olivia?" he said with concern.
"I'm fine, Zig. I have chocolatitus.”
“Is it serious? Is the baby OK?” He was serious.
“Sorry. My attempt at humor. I ate a whole box of chocolate last night. Every time I think I'm starting to feel better, the pain kicks in again."
Zig let out a sigh of relief. “Well, take it easy. If you need anything let me know."
Olivia met Lisa and Hope for lunch. After she sat down, Lisa mentioned she appeared tired. "Eating that box of chocolate was a mistake." Olivia moaned and rubbed her hands over her stomach. Lisa eyed Olivia, scooted over and put a hand on her stomach as well.
"Does your stomach feel tight?" She gave Hope a knowing glance.
"I think so. I'm so mad at myself for eating that whole box! My stomach is still hurting at times.”
“Why don't we time from the beginning of one pain until the start of the next and see what's going on." Lisa took off her watch and laid it on the table.
"You don't think I'm in labor do you?" Olivia stared at Lisa in surprise.
"It could be. Sometimes it's hard to tell at first." Olivia began to feel excited. Maybe it was going to happen at last! They all waited on pins and needles until the pain started again.
"That was six minutes. How long has this been going on, Olivia?"
"It woke me up at about two this morning, but it hasn't been that painful. I don't know."
They finished up and paid the bill. Lisa asked Olivia if she might be able to take off the rest of the afternoon and go for a walk. She called Zig and, with his permission, they all headed down to the river walk. For the next hour, they talked and walked, stopping every four to ten minutes for what they were now certain were contractions. Some were starting to hurt quite a bit, but so far Olivia was handling them pretty well. Olivia stopped to lean against a bench. "How long does labor last?"
"My sister took thirty-six hours for her first one!" Hope didn't know much about giving birth, but she had heard the story many times at family functions. Lisa nudged Hope to quiet her. She then saw that Olivia was terrified. "Not that it’s how it will be for you, Olivia." Hope decided after that to keep quiet and let Lisa do the talking.
Olivia had to stop again to tie her shoe. As she bent down, she felt a gush of water. "Oh my word!" Lisa grabbed her arm to help her stand back up. "Your water broke! Thankfully the hospital is just across the bridge. Why don't we go get you checked out?"
By the time they got across the bridge, the pain had become quite intense. When they walked in, the receptionist behind the desk asked them a few questions. Olivia told her that she was ten days past her due date and her water had broken.
